Inspired by master artists artworks, explore approaches to drawing a composition, inspired by artist John Sell Cotman as a foundation for painting.

John Sell Cotman (16 May 1782 – 24 July 1842) was an English marine and landscape painter, etcher, illustrator, and a leading member of the Norwich School of painters.

Learn wet and dry brush techniques and methods for water colour. Practice these processes by recreating local landscape scenes from photographic reference as a starting point to your drawings and paintings.

Look at drawings and painting of artists work sourced from Art Galleries, Museums and University Art collections online.

  • Explore small colour compositions

  • Study the style and vision of master artists techniques in their expression of nature

  • Wet washes and dry-brush techniques, layering and lifting

Art Supplies: Chinese ink (dedicated brush & pen); watercolour paints using six primary colours; cadmium red, permanent rose, lemon and cadmium yellow medium, ultramarine and cerulean blue, payne’s grey and white; pencil HB, soft eraser ; Watercolour paper, mixed-media sketchbook
