About

Katharine was brought up in a family of artists. After completing an M.A. at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London, U.K. She quickly joined the renowned London illustration agent, Artists Partners. There, she worked as a professional freelance illustrator for various publishing companies, including The Financial Times, Harper Collins, Penguin Books and Virago Modern Classics, as well as advertising agencies and animation studios in the U.K.

In 1995 Katharine moved to Vancouver, B.C., where she continued her career as an artist and illustrator. She has been working as an artist-educator specializing in observational drawing methods and techniques for botanical illustration and landscape painting since 2010.

In her courses, Katharine introduces students to historical and contemporary works, analyzing and deconstructing techniques of master artists, so that students can explore self-artistic expression with confidence. Through her method, she merges teachings in technical accuracy with the magic and power of creativity, using both digital and traditional art-making techniques. By helping students slow down and experience the meditative effects of focused observational drawing, Katharine helps her students learn about nature and further their appreciation of the natural world.

Katharine is passionate about hiking in the local mountains and making art while outdoors. She teaches a variety of drawing and watercolour painting classes, both privately and for local institutions.
